If you own online store or want to own one, this rule will useful for you. Despite I am specializing in Magento stores, this rule extend to all ecommerce platforms and offline sales.

What is that the rule of thumb?

Marketers and social scientists love to create rules like laws of physics. Usually it seems ridiculous. But this rule was created by experience. Possible you know this rule. And in some cases you can face exempt from that rule.

Rule

Than more you investment in business than more money you will make. But you can lose more money. In other hand than less money you investment, than less money you make. But you can lose less money.

Examples

The person want create online store. Which ecommerce platform the person need? The low-cost and low-technology easy to use the platform saves money. But this platform has few functions. The expensive platform has a lot of features, but need much investment. The expensive ecommerce platform provides a lot of products, give many shipping methods and support SEO in right way.
If you choose low-cost ecommerce platform, you can’t use all necessary functions. The part of visitors will leave online store because they won’t find needed shipping method for example.

The expensive ecommerce platform gives visitors many services. But, if store won’t enough sales, the investments won’t pay back.

The person want migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2 platform. The migration or rather re-platform is expensive process. In how far this is justified depends on how the person plans to change store or even business approach. The little changes give little profit.

Redesign or update online store design? You need big changes, if you want big profit.

But you can see many stories about how little changes give huge profit it doesn’t true. The color of button was changed and merchant get profit.

I didn’t see any statistic info based real experience. You can’t found this info too. It is the exception. Your business can’t always base on exceptions.
